Let x = the number of liters of water to be added to the 500 liters of 5% salt soluton.
The strategy is to compare the amount of salt in the solution before the addition of the water (0.05)(500) to the amount of salt in the solution after adding the x liters of water (0.02)(500+x).
0.05(500) = 0.02(500+x)
25 = 10+0.02x
15 = 0.02x
x = 750
You should add 750 liters of water to the 500 liters of 5% salt solution to obtain 1250 liters of 2% salt solution.
