Question 399660: This makes no sens what so ever... I am an 7th grader taking highschool math courses and this just stumped me.
Sarah and her brother, Jacob, worked hard weeding their neighbor’s garden. Together, they earned a total of $1040. Sarah earned $240 more than Jacob. How much did each of them earn?

Sarah and her brother, Jacob, worked hard weeding their neighbor’s garden. Together, they earned a total of $1040. Sarah earned $240 more than Jacob. How much did each of them earn?
Write a system of two equations with two variables to model this problem.
Use substitution or the elimination method to solve the system.
----
Equations:
s + j = 1040
s = j+240
------------------
Substitute for "s" and solve for "j":
(j+240)+j = 1040
2j = 800
j = $400 (amount of money Jacob earned)
----------------------------------------
Solve for "s":
s = j+240
s = 400 + 240
s = $640 (amount of money Sarah earned)
------------------------
Checking:
s+j = 1040
640 + 400 = 1040
1040 = 1040
---
s = j + 240
640 = 400 + 240
640 = 640
-------------------

Stan H.

Answer by Tatiana_Stebko(1539) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
If Sarah earned $x, and Jacob earned $y, then together they earned x+y, we know that they earned $1040, so we have the first equation
Sarah earned $240 more than Jakob, so x-y=240 (second equation)
The system of two equations with two variables to model this problem is
x+y=1040
x-y=240
Let use the elimination method
let add the first equation to the second
x+y=1040
(x-y)+(x+y)=240+1040
.
x+y=1040
2x=1280, then $ Sarah earned
Let put x=640 in the first equation x+y=1040
640+y=1040
y=1040-640
y=400 $ Jakob earned
answer: x=640,y=400
For check answer put x=640,y=400 in any equations of system
x+y=1040, 640+400=1040, 1040=1040 (correct)
x-y=240, 640-400=240, 240=240 (correct)
Answer: Sarah earned $640; Jakob earned $400
