Answer by stanbon(75887) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
a plane can travel 1260 miles in 2 hours.
the return trip takes a half an hour longer.
find the wind speed.
--------------------------
With-wind DATA:
distance = 1260 miles ; time = 2 hrs ; Rate = 1260/2 = 630 mph
--------
Against-wind DATA:
distance = 1260 miles ; time = 5/2 hrs ; Rate=1260/(5/2) = 504 mph
----
Equations:
P + w = 630
P - w = 504
----
2p = 1134
p = 567 (speed of the plane in still air)
---
Since p+w = 630, w = 630-567 = 63 mph (speed of the wind)
