A pharmacist needs 50 liters of a 60% alcohol solution. She currently has available a 20% solution and a 70% solution. How many liters of each must she use to make the 60% solution?
--------------------
Equation:
alc + alc = alc
0.20x + 0.70(50-x) = 0.60*50
Multiply thru by 100 to get:
20x + 70*50 - 70x = 60*50
-50x = -10*50
x = 1/5 liter (amt. of 20% solution needed in the mixture)
---
50-x = 49 4/5 liters (amt of 70% solution needed in the mixture)
----------
