Answer by jim_thompson5910(35256) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
You don't need to make a chart.
Since "There are 40 dimes and quarters in the drawer", we know that where 'd' is the number of dimes and 'q' is the number of quarters.
Also, because "their total value was $4.75", this means that
So solving the system
will give you the number of dimes and quarters.
--------------------------------------------------
Start with the second equation.
Multiply EVERY term by 100 to make every number a whole number.
Move back to the first equation.
Subtract 'q' from both sides.
Go back the to the second equation.
Plug in
Distribute.
Combine like terms on the left side.
Subtract from both sides.
Combine like terms on the right side.
Divide both sides by to isolate .
Reduce.
So this means that there are 5 quarters.
Now move onto the equation where we've isolated 'd'.
Plug in
Subtract
So there are 35 dimes.
