one alloy contains 20% silver and another contains 8% silver. How many grams of each should be mixed to give 120 g of an alloy which is 15% silver?
-------
Equation:
silver + silver = silver
------
0.20x + 0.08(120-x) = 0.15*120
----
Multiply thru by 100:
20x + 8*120 - 8x = 15*120
------
12x = 7*120
x = 70 grams (amt of 20% alloy needed in the mixture)
----
120-x = 50 grams (amt of 8% alloy needed in the mixture)
