Question 342331: One more question i hope someone can help me with! Here it is: Soybean meal is 18% protein, cornmeal is 9 % protein. How many pounds of each should be mixed together in order to get 360 lb mixture that is 11 % protein?
I hope someone can help me...i am hating these word problems!

Let A be the amount of soybeans, B the amount of cornmeal.
Write an equation for the total weight of the mixture.

Write an equation for the total protein content of the mixture.

Subtract eq. 1 from eq. 2,

Then from eq. 1,

Use 80 lbs of soybeans, 280 lbs of cornmeal.

Quantity eq.: s + c = 360 lbs
Protein EqL::0.18s+0.09c = 0.11*360
------------------------------------------
Multiply thru the 1st by 18
Multiply thru the 2nd by 100
---
18s + 18c = 18*360
18s + 9c = 11*360
----------------------
Subtract the 2nd from the 1st and solve for "c":
9c = 7*360
c = 7*40
corn = 280 lbs (amt. of corn meal needed in the mixture)

Since s+c = 360, s = 360-280 = 80 lbs (amt. of soybean meal needed)
