The first thing you want to do is write down the numbers they have given you in equation form. There are two numbers involved whose values we don't know. Let's call them x and y with y being the larger number. "The larger of two numbers is 8 more than 4 times the smaller": (#1) . Now for the second sentence. "If the larger is increased by four times the smaller, the result is 40.": (#2). We have a two variables (x and y), and we have two equations, PERFECT! Just for your knowledge: If we ever have more variables then equations, that means you can't solve the variable =) Continuing on, we can substitute to solve the equations. If you subtract y from both sides of the first equation you get . Let's plug into the equation #1. You get becomes . Then you can add y to both sides to get .
