tom is three times as old as lee.
T = 3L
:
in 7 years, the sum of half of tom's present age and 1/3 of lee's age will be the same as tom age now.
T + (L+7) = T
Multiply by 6, results
3T + 2(L+7) = 6T
3T + 2L + 14 = 6T
:
Replace T with 3L
3(3L) + 2L + 14 = 6(3L)

9L + 2L + 14 = 18L

11L + 14 = 18L
:
14 = 18L - 11L
:
14 = 7L
L =
L = 2 yrs
then 3(2) = 6 yrs is Tom's age
