Question 295586: A tank holds 2940 gallons. You want to fill it with a 20% NaOH (caustic) solution. You have 25% NaOH solution available. How many gallons of water must be mixed with how many gallons of 25% NaOH solution to fill your tank with 2940 gallons of 20% NaOH solution? (1 gallon of water weighs 8.34lbs and 1 gallon of 25% NaOH weighs 10.66 lbs)
Thanks for any help on this problem. I know simple solutions but got really confused with the different weights per gallon.

They tricked you. We don't need to be concerned with weights. It was thrown in to confuse you and it did.
x+y=2940
.25x=(x+y)*.20
x=2352., y=588.
588 gallons of water
2352 gallons of 25% NaOH solution.
