If I have ten pounds of peanuts at 3.50 a pound.. how many pounds of almonds do I need to mix in at $3 a pound in order to have a cost of $3.40 a pound?

Let amount of pounds of almonds be A

10 lbs of peanuts, at $3.5 per = $35

A lbs of almonds, at $3 per = 3A

Total cost of peanuts + total cost of almonds = total cost of nuts

35 + 3A = 10 + A(3.4), or 35 + 3A = 3.4(10 + A)

35 + 3A = 34 + 3.4A

3A - 3.4A = 34 - 35

- .4A = - 1

A, or amount of pounds of almonds needed = lbs.

Check

10(3.5) + 2.5(3) = (10 + 2.5)3.4

35 + 7.5 = 34 + 8.5

$42.50 = $42.50 (TRUE)

Also TRUE ------> $42.50 / 12.5 lbs = $3.40
