A pharmacist is to prepare a 50 fluid ounce solution that contains 54% glucose. The pharmacy has a 30% solution and a 90% solution on hand. How many ounces of each solution should be mixed to prepare the desired prescription?
--------------------------------
Equation:
glucose + glucose = glucose
0.30x + 0.90(50-x) = 0.54*50
Multiply thru by 100 to get:
30x + 90*50 - 90x = 54*50
-60x = -36*50
---
x = (5/6)(36)
x = 30 fluid ounces (amt. of 30% solution needed for the mixture)
---
50-x = 20 fluid ounces (amt. of 90% solution needed for the mixture)
