45 (17%) + x (0%) = (45 + x) (10%) ___ multiply by 100 to clear percentages

765 + 0 = 450 + 10x

315 = 10x

31.5 = x

A nurse wishes to add water to 45 ounces of a 17% solution of benzalkonium chloride to dilute it to an 10% solution. How much water must she add? 

The 45 oz of 17% solution contains (.17)(45) or 7.65 oz of benzalkonium
chloride (ADBAC) and the rest water.  If he adds x oz of water then he'll
have 45+x oz of liquid of which 7.65 oz is ADBAC.  

Then the 7.65 oz of ADBAC will be (equal) 10% of the 45 + x oz. of liquid.



Multiply both side by 100 moves the decimals right two places:



Solve that and get 31.5 oz of water to add
