Question 25639: Suppose you have a 9 quart container and a 4 quart container. How can you obtain exactly 6 quarts of water in the large container?
Answer by mewtwo1(3)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
First, fill the 4-quart container up, then pour the 4-quart into the 9-quart container, then fill the 4-quart again and then pour it into the 9-quart container again. So far you should have exactly 8 quarts of water in the 9-quart container and an empty 4-quart container. Fill the 4-quart container up and pour it into the 9-quart container UNTILL it is Full.
Now you should have a full 9-quart container and 3 quarts of water in the 4-quart container. Dump (dispose) the water in the 9-quart so it is empty, then pour the 3 quarts of water from the 4-quart container into the 9-quart container. Fill the 4-quart again and pour it again into the 9-quart. Then (again) Fill the 4-quart up and then pour it into the 9-quart UNTILL it is full, then Dump the water out of the 9-quart.
Now, you should have an empty 9-quart container and 2 quarts of water in the 4-quart container. Pour the water in the 4-quart container into the 9-quart container. Then fill the 4-quart up and FINALY pour the 4 quarts of water from the 4-quart container into the 9-quart container that had 2 quarts of water.
Now …. The 4-quart container is empty and the 9-quart container has EXACTLY 6 quarts of water in it. Yey!!!
