Question 252635: A 400 gram solution made up of 40% sugar must be added to a 200 gram solution. What should be the percentage of sugar in 200gram of solution in order to produce a 38% sugar solution?
Answer by drk(1908)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
This is your traditional mixture problem. Let's create the table:
sugar . . . % . . . gram . . . %gram
A . . . . . 40 . . .400 . . . . 16000
B . . . . . X . . . 200 . . . . 200X
MIX . . . . 38 . . .600 . . . . 22800.
I put in the 40% and 400 grams for first sugar as well as the 200 grams for the second sugar. I didn't know % of second sugar, so I call it X. The mixture calls for 38%, so I put it in the mix, % box. 400 grams + 200 grams = 600 grams - the total number of grams in the mix.
% x gram = %gram.
Now,
16000 + 200X = 22800.
200X = 6800
X = 34%.
So, we need 34% of the 200 gram sugar.
