The results of a survey for an airline are shown below
Traveler Male Female Total
Business 47 72 119
Vacation 71 64 135
Total 118 136 254
Use the chart to find the probability that the traveler was
a) male
b) on vacation given the traveler was female
c) male given the traveler was on vacation
Answer by ilana(307) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
For each question, you need to know the total successful cases and the total possible cases (give the necessary conditions).
a) There are no necessary conditions, so the total possible is the total travelers, 254. The total successful is the amount of males, 118. You should be able to divide to find the probability on your own. (You can write this as a fraction or a percent.)
b) The necessary condition (given) is that the traveler is female. So the total possible is the total number of females, 136. Now, looking at only the females column, the successful amount is the number on vacation, 64. Again, divide to find the probability.
c) The necessary condition (given) is that the traveler is on vacation. So the total possible is the total number on vacation, 135. Now, looking at only the vacation row, the successful amount is the number of males, 71. Once again, divide to find the probability.
