Question 198270: Lemon drops worth $3.80 per pound are to be mixed with jelly beans that cost $2.40 per pound to make a mixture worth $2.96 per pound. How many pounds of each candy should be used?
Answer by josmiceli(19441) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let = pounds of lemon drops to use
Let = pounds of jelly beans to use
= cost of lemon drops in mixture (in cents)
= cost of jelly beans in mixture (in cents)
I think there is a missing piece of information, or it's
not really clear how many pounds of the mixture
they want to make. I need another equation such as:
if they want to make 1 pound of mixture
Multiply both sides by
Now subtract this from the other equation
----------------------
.4 pound of lemon drops and .6 pounds of jelly beans are needed
to make 1 pound of mixture.
Note that you could scale this up if you wanted 10 pounds of mixture
, or use any other scale factor.
