: I have a word problem that I cannot figure out.
Problem is:
The Nature Center sells bird seed for 75 cents per pound and sunflower seed for $1.10 per pound. To the nearest pound, how many pounds of sunflower seed should be used to create a 50-pound mixture that sells for $0.90 per pound.
I have tried the following: 1.10x+.75x = .90(50) and 1.10x+.75x = .90(50+2x).
The first one came close to the answer but still not the answer.
Thank you,

Answer by stanbon(75887)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The Nature Center sells bird seed for 75 cents per pound and sunflower seed for $1.10 per pound. To the nearest pound, how many pounds of sunflower seed should be used to create a 50-pound mixture that sells for $0.90 per pound.
-------------------
Equation:
value + value = value
75x + 110(50-x) = 90*50
75x + 110*50 - 110x = 90*50
-35x = -20*50
x = 28.57 lbs (amt. of 75 cent seed in the mixture)
50-28.57 = 21.43 lbs. (amt of $1.10 seed in the mixtue)
