Let x = amount of imitation syrup added
.
18(40) + 8.50x = 11(40+x)
720 + 8.50x = 440 + 11x
280 + 8.50x = 11x
280 = 2.50x
112 liters = x

720+8.50x=440+11x
8.5x-11x=440-720
-2.50x=-280
x=-280/-2.50
x=112 liters of $8.50 imitation syrup is used.
