1. A student assistant at a university copy center has some nickels and dimes to use for change when students make copies. The value of the coins is $7.40. There are 26 more dimes than nickels. How many of each kind of coin are there?

then from:"There are 26 more dimes than nickels"
N+26 = number of dimes

Total value given is $7.40
.
Our equation:
.05N + .10(N+26) = 7.40
.05N + .10N + 2.6 = 7.40
.15N + 2.6 = 7.40
.15N = 4.8
N = 4.8/.15
N = 32 (number of nickels)

dimes = N+26 = 32+26 = 58 (number of dimes)
