Question 133896: An auto mechanic has 300mL of batter acid solution that is 60% acid. He must add water to this solution to dilute it so that it is only 45% acid. How much water should he add?
Answer by ptaylor(2198) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x=amount of water that needs to be added
Now we know that the pure acid in the water (0) plus the pure acid in the 60% solution (0.60*300) has to equal the amount of pure acid in the final mixture (0.45(300+x))
So our equation to solve is:
0.60*300=0.45(300+x) simplify
180=135+0.45x subtract 135 from each side
180-135=0.45x
0.45x=45 divide both sides by 0.45
x=100ml------------------amount of water that needs to be added
CK
0.60*300=0.45*400
180=180
