grocer buys walnuts for $0.45/lb. and pecans for $0.60/lb. If the nuts must be combined for a 90 lb. mix worth $0.55/lb, how many pounds of walnuts must be added?
:
Let x = no. of lbs of walnuts required
then
(90-x) = no. of lbs of pecans required
:
we can do this without the decimals, just use cents:
:
45x + 60(90-x) = 55(90)
:
45x = 5400 - 60x = 4950
:
45x - 60x = 4950 - 5400
:
-15x = -450
x =
x = +30 lb of walnuts
:
:
that would leave 60 lb of pecans; see if that checks out
45(30) + 60(60) = 55(90)
1350 + 3600 = 4950; confirms our solution
