A forester mixes gasoline and oil to make 2 gallons of mixture for his two cycle chain-saw engine. This mixture is 32 parts gasoline and 1 part two cycle oil. How much gasoline must be added to bring the mixture to 40 parts gasoline and one part oil?

The total parts in the original mixture would be: 32 + 1 = 33 parts
The total parts in the new mixture will be: 40 + 1 = 41 parts
of it is oil
:
*2 = (x+2)
:
Cross multiply
33(x+2) = 41(2)
33x + 66 = 82
33x = 62 - 66
33x = 16
x = 16/33
x = .48 gal, say, half gallon of gasoline required
