:
A grocer combined walnuts that cost $2.60 per pound and cashews that cost $3.50 per pound with 20 lb of peanuts that cost $2.00 per pound. Find the amount of walnuts and the amount of cashews used to make the 50 lb mixture costing $2.72 per pound.
:
Here's the equation:
We know that final amt of 50 lbs contain 20 lb of peanuts, therefore, the total
amt of walnuts and a cashews = 30 lb
:
Let x = amt of walnuts
then
(30-x) = amt of cashews
:
The equation
2.00(20) + 2.60x + 3.50(30-x) = 2.72(50)
:
40 + 2.6x + 105 - 3.5x = 136
2.6x - 3.5x + 145 = 136
-.9x = 136 - 145
-.9x = -9
x = -9/-.9
x = +10 lb of walnuts
then
30 - 10 = 20 lb of cashews
:
:
Check our solutio:
2(20) + 2.6(10) + 3.5(20) = 2.72(50)
40 + 26 + 70 = 136; confirms our solutions
