Question 1144776: In the lab, Kaitlin has two solutions that contain alcohol and is mixing them with each other. She uses 4 times as much Solution A as Solution B. Solution A is 15% alcohol and Solution B is 19% alcohol. How many milliliters of Solution B does she use, if the resulting mixture has 395 milliliters of pure alcohol?

.

Let "x" be the amount of solution B, in milliliters.

Then the amount of the solution A is 4x milliliters, according to the condition.

The equation for the amount of the pure alcohol is

    0.15*(4x) + 0.19x = 395   millilites.

Simplify and find x

    0.6x + 0.19x = 395

    0.79x        = 395

        x        = 395/0.79 = 500  milliliters.    ANSWER

Solved.
