It was 2:15 on Annie’s watch when she left her house to go to the library. While
at the library she adjusted her watch by setting it forward from 2:40 to 2:49. It
was 3:09 on her watch when she returned home. For how many minutes was Annie away
from home? 

She set her watch from 2:40 to 2:49, which means she set it forward by 9 minutes.

Had she not set her watch 9 minutes forward, she would have left home when her
watch read 2:15 and gotten home when her watch read 3:00, and therefore she was
away from home 45 minutes.
