A man wants to make up 100 one-pound jars of nuts to sell for 66 cents a jar.
He plans to use 40 pounds of nuts worth 75 cents a pound.
What should be the price of the other type of nuts he uses?
:
100 - 40 = 60 lb of the other kind of nuts
let x = the price of these nuts
.75(40) + 60x = .66(100)
30 + 60x = 66
60x = 66 - 30
x = 36/60
x = .60
:
The other nuts price is 60 cents
:
:
Check: .75(40) + .60(60) = .66(100)
30 + 36 = 66

You are using 40lbs of 0.75 and want to make 100, so you must add 60lbs of x:
40(0.75) + 60(x) = 100(0.66)
30 + 60x = 66
60x = 36
x = 0.60
the price of the other type of nuts should be 60 cents a pound

The 100 pounds of mixture at 66 cents per pound are worth 100*66 = 6600 cents.

The 40 pounds of nuts worth 75 cents per pound are worth 40*75 = 3000 cents.

The value of the other 60 pounds of nuts has to be (6600-3000) = 3600 cents.

The price per pound of those other nuts is 3600/60 = 60 cents.
