Question 112283: I'm having a problem. Can you help me step by step please.I don't know where to begin.
Two cyclists start from the same point and ride in opposite directions. One cyclist rides 4mph faster than the other. In 3 hours the cyclists are 60 miles apart. Find the rate of speed of the slower cyclist.

Answer by checkley71(8403) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
DISTANCE=RATE*TIME
SEEING AS THESE DISTANCES ARE ADDITIVE WE ADD THESE 2 (RATE*TIME) FIGURES THUS:
60=X*3+(X+4)3
60=3X+3X+12
6X=60-12
6X=48
X=48/6
X=8 MPH IS THE SPEED FOR THE SLOWEST CYCLIST.
PROOF
60=8*3+(8+4)3
60=24+12*3
60=24+36
60=60
