Question 1122001: In the lab, Lashonda has two solutions that contain alcohol and is mixing them with each other. She uses
300
milliliters less of Solution A than Solution B. Solution A is
19%
alcohol and Solution B is
12%
alcohol. How many milliliters of Solution A does she use, if the resulting mixture has
377
milliliters of pure alcohol?

.
Let x = "How many milliliters of Solution A does she use", in mL.

Then the amount of the solution B is (x+300) mL.

Then your equation is

"pure alcohol" + "pure alcohol" = "total pure alcohol"

0.19x          +  0.12*(x+300)  = 377.

Simplify and solve for x:

0.19x + 0.12x + 36 = 377

0.31x = 377 - 36 = 341  ====>  x =  = 1100 mL.

Answer. She uses 1100 mL of solution A.

Solved.
