if holstein cows produce milk that is on average 3.66% butterfat and jersey cows produce milk that is on average 4.5% butterfat, how many gallons of jersey milk should be added to every 100 gallons of Holstein milk to have milk that is 4% butterfat?
:
Let j = amt of Jersey milk required
.0366(100) + .045j = .04(j+100)
3.66 + .045j = .04j + 4
.045j - .04j = 4 - 3.66
.005j = .34
j = .34/.005
j = 68 gal of Jersey milk to be added to the 100 of Holstein milk
:
:
check this in the original equation
3.66 + .045(68) = .04(168)
3.66 + 3.06 = 6.72

Answer by ikleyn(52792)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
.
butterfat   + butterfat = butterfat

0.0366*100  + 0.045*J   = 0.04*(100+J)  (where J is the volume of the Jersey milk, in gallons)  ====>

0.0366*100 + 0.045*J = 0.04*100 + 0.04*J

0.045*J - 0.04*J = 0.04*100 - 0.0366*100 = 0.34.

0.005*J = 0.34  ====>  H =  = 68 gallons.

Check.  0.0366*100 + 0.045*68 = 6.72 buttermilk

        0.04*(100+68) = 6.72 buttermilk.    ! Correct !

Answer. 68 gallons of Jersey milk should be added to every 100 gallons of Holstein milk.
