Two numbers has [have] a relationship of 3:5 and the difference between them are [is] 40. What are the numbers?
Let multiplicative factor be x
Then smaller number is: 3x, and larger is: 5x
Since their DIFFERENCE is 40, we get: 5x - 3x = 40
2x = 40

No other answer is ACCEPTABLE since a ratio of 3:5 means that the number in the numerator (3) is SMALLER than the number in the denominator (5).

relation between two numbers: x/y = 3/5
cross multiply you get,
5x=3y
x=3y/5
difference between x and y is 40
x-y = 40
substitute x into equation,
(3y/5)-y=40
y=-100
and back-substitute into x = 3y/5
you get x= -60
check
-60-(-100)=40
-60/(-100) = 3/5
the answers satisfy all conditions.
if you have alternative methods solving it, i would love to hear from you, thank you
