Question 1039676: Please help me solve this problem. This is the last problem on my homework. Its hard for me to solve. I am stuck. Please help.
A chemist has two solutions of HCl. One has a 40% concentration and the other has a 25% concentration. How many liters of each solution must be mixed to obtain 93 liters of a 26% solution?
Answer by rothauserc(4718) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x + y = 93, where x is amount of 40% concentration and y is amount of 25% concentration
:
x = 93 - y
:
93 * 0.26 = 24.18 of HCI
:
0.40x + 0.25y = 24.18
:
now substitute 93 - y for x
:
0.40(93 - y) + 0.25y = 24.18
:
37.2 - 0.40y + 0.25y = 24.18
:
-0.15y = -13.02
:
y = 86.8
x = 6.2
:

We need to mix
6.2 liters of the 40% HCI solution with
86.8 liters of the 25% HCI solution
