Question 58875: A designer, attempting to arrange the characters of his artwork in the form of a square grid with equal number of rows and columns, found that 24 characters were left out. When he tried to add one more row and column, he found that he was short of 25 characters. Can you find the number of characters used by the designer?
This is what I have..Let x=original number of rows of the square grid. Since number of rows and columns are equal, then number of columns is x also. So the original area, or original number of characters of the square, is x^2. Also, 24 characters were left out, so first set up the expression for total number of characters based on this. Also, when he added one more row and column, making each x+1 now, the new area is (x+1)^2 and is short 25 characters. So get a new expression for the number of characters. Set the two expressions equal since each represents the total number of characters. Solve for x.

Question 65561: Draw the appropriate graphs in each of the following.
A small firm produces both AM and AM/FM car radios. The AM radios take 15 h to produce, and the AM/FM radios take 20 h. The number of production hours is limited to 300 h per week. The plant’s capacity is limited to a total of 18 radios per week, and existing orders require that at least 4AM radios and at least 3 AM/FM radios be produced per week. Write a system of inequalities representing this situation. Then, draw a graph of the feasible region given these conditions, in, which x is the number of AM radios and y the number of AM/FM radios.

Question 66822: Here is the original question and answer this is based off of: Think about a real-life situation that follows a linear equation, with the independent variable being Years. What would the slope tell you about future years?
:
A real life situation where an independent variable representing years would be in the medical field. For instance, a doctor examining an individual who smoked would show signs of damage done to the individuals lungs because of the smoking. The variable would independently represent the years the individuals smoked.
:
Now my instructor wants us to create and equation or inequality that could be used for analysis, prediction, or decision making. Then, draw a graph to depict the variables in your situation. Use your graph and what you know about linear inequalities to discuss the significance of your findings.
:
I came up with the 29 year old that has smoked for 12 years. I do not know what to do or how to do this. Help is despratley needed here. :0) Thanks.
