x + 2x = 30 {the total amount of water is 30 gallons}
3x = 30 {combined like terms}
x = 10 {divided each side by 3}
2x = 20 {substituted 10, in for x, into 2x}
one container holds 10 gallons
the other container holds 20 gallons
