: Here's a word problem that I don't understand how to set up an equation for.
There is only one freshman in the cast of the high school musical. There are 6 sophomores and 11 juniors. One third of the cast are seniors. How many seniors are in the musical?
I don't understand what equation you would use to solve that. It's very confusing to me. Could you please help me out?

Answer by edjones(8007) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
1+6+11=18
let x=entire cast
18=(2/3)x
divide 2/3 into both sides. x=3/2*18=27
27-18=9 seniors in the musical.
Check:
9/27=1/3
