Question 979837: I am currently studying Intermediate Algebra. This word problem sounds like a geometry problem but I know it has to do with factoring and quadratic equations.
Your backyard deck has an area of 240 square feet. You've decided to rebuild the deck because you want to plant a garden that gets the afternoon sun. Your partner agrees to the project, on the condition that the area of the deck remains the same. To accomplish your goal, you draw up plans to decrease the length of the deck by 4 feet, and increase the width by 3 feet. What are the current dimensions of the deck?
This is what I've come up with so far, but I know it is incorrect.
(2w+3)(2L-4)=240 [Let w be the width and L be the length]
I am having an issue with trying to set it up.
Answer by josgarithmetic(39616) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Present length and width are L and w.
Present area A=240, and keeping this the same after rebuilding is wanted.
CONTINUING TO WORK IN SYMBOLS, remove h feet from length and increase width by k feet. h=4 and k=3.
.
Your factor of 2 is a mistake. You are possibly confusing the example problem with uniform-width border type rectangular area problems.
