together, sari and Riley can mark the lines on a soccer fields at a recreation center 11 minutes faster than if Riley lines the fields on her own.
if it takes sari 132 minutes to line the fields by herself, how long would it take Riley to do the job alone?
:
Let r = R's time to do the job alone
then
(r-11) = their time working together
:
Let the completed job = 1
A shared work equation
+ = 1
multiply by 132r, cancel the denominators and you have
r(r-11) + 132(r-11) = 132r
r^2 - 11r + 132r - 1452 = 132r
Combine on the left
r^2 - 11r + 132r - 132r - 1452 = 0
r^2 - 11r - 1452 = 0
Use the quadratic formula to find r. a=1; b=-11; c=-1452
I got a positive solution of 44 minutes R alone
:\
:
See if we can confirm that
+ = 1
.25 + .75 = 1
