Question 935101: When solving a system of 2 equations and 2 unknowns using the substitution method, what is the ideal value of the coefficient of the isolated variable?
Answer by rothauserc(4718)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
the target value of the coefficient of the isolated variable is 1, this is so we can substitute for the isolated variable in the other equation. For example,
1)2x + 3y = 15
2)6x + 7y = 35
chose equation 1 and solve for target variable x and we get
x = (-3y/2) +(15/2)
we can then substitute for x in equation 2 and solve for y and then x
