Answer by josgarithmetic(39615) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Really needs to be read and analyzed carefully as you read and REread.
Eight times a number plus five times another number is -13. The sum of the two numbers is 1. What are the numbers?
You can split into this:
"Eight times a number"
plus
"five times another number"
is
"-13".
"a number" plus "another number" is "1".
Those phrases and parts must now be clear. You need to assign variables for the unknown numbers; and then form your two equations.
YOUR TURN!
