"The difference of two numbers is 27"
"The second is 1 less than 3 times the first"
Plug in
Distribute
Combine the variable terms 1x and -3x on the left side to get -2x
Subtract 1 from both sides
Combine like terms -1 and 27 on the right side to get 26
Now divide both sides by -2 to isolate and solve for x
Reduce
So our answer is
Plug in to find y
So the two numbers are -13 and -40

Check:
Plug in x=-13 and y=-40
works

Just write what it says:
:
"The difference of two numbers is 27."
One number = x
the 2nd number = (x-27)
:
"The second is 1 less than 3 times the first.
x - 27 = 3x - 1
:
What are the two numbers?
x - 3x = -1 + 27
-2x = +26
x = 26/-2
x = -13
:
2nd number: -13 - 27 = -40
:
Check using the statement "The second is 1 less than 3 times the first."
-40 = 3(-13) - 1
