The president of a small college travelled on a prop plane for 300 miles, then took a jet for the remaining 1800 miles of his vacation. the jet speed was 4 times faster than the speed of the prop plane. if the entire flying time was 5 hours, find the speed of the jet.
-------------
Jet plane DATA:
distance = 1800 ; rate = 4x mph ; time = d/r = 1800/4x = 450/x hrs
----------------
Prop plane DATA;
disance 300 miles ; rate = x mph ; time = d/r = 300/x hrs
-----------------
EQUATION:
time + time = 5 hrs
450/x + 300/x = 5
450 + 300 = 5x
5x = 750
x = 150
4x = 600 mph (speed of the jet)
