Question 859844: A research group interested in understanding the effect of listening to classical music on learning mathematics conducted a study. One hundred students were randomly assigned to one of two groups. The first group listened to classical music as they learned a new lesson. The second group learned the same lesson with no music playing. Both groups were tested on the new material to determine how much they learned. The results for the two groups were compared. What kind of study is this?
I am not sure if this is observational or experimental. Can you please tell me and tell me how you know so I can know how to find the answer to the others like this? Thank you SO much for reading this and taking the time to help!

The fundamental difference is that an experiment requires you to observe what happens when you make some sort of change. An observational study finds the relationship between changes that already exist.
This is an experiment.
