 5D = C (there are five times as many chickens as ducks)

D + 640 = C (there are 640 chickens more than ducks)

Substitute the value of C in the second equation for the value of C in the first equation.

5D = C

5D = D + 640

Subtract D from each side

4D = 640

Divide each side by 4

D = 160

.

If there are 160 ducks, there must be 160+640 chickens, or 800.

Does that fit the first equation?  800 = 5*160?  Yes, they are equal.

Ducks = 160

Chickens = 640

Chicken and ducks together = 640 + 160 = 800
