Question 838276: Sally was asked to find two integers such that one is three less than 4 times the other and the sum of the two integers is 42. The integers must be _____.
A.
14, 28
B. 15, 27
C.
9, 33
D.
-13, 55

Answer by LinnW(1048)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
set I = one integer
J = another
I = 4J -3
I + J = 42 .
substitute (4J -3) for I
(4J -3) + J = 42
5J -3 = 42
add 3 to each side
5J = 45
divide each side by 5
J = 9
Since I = 4J -3 , I = 4*9 - 3 = 36 - 3 = 33
So the two numbers are 9 and 33
