Question 831916: A man was on his deathbed, and wanted to settle his estate with a will. His estate amounted to 1000 ducats. Of these, he left 200 to his church. His wife was soon to give birth, and he wished to make specific provisions for his widow and orphan to be. As was the custom in that day, the man hoped that his wife would soon deliver a son. So, he made this disposition: If the child was a girl, then she and her mother would share the money equally. If the child was a boy, he was to have 500 ducats, leaving the widow only 300. Shortly after the man died, his widow gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl.
Honoring the dead man’s will, calculate how many ducats each would receive.
Hint: There are two conditions established here. Your solution must satisfy BOTH of them.

This is sort of a trick question because the man leaves a specific amount to the son and a fraction to the daughter.
Start with 1000. Subtract the 200 given to his church. That leaves an estate of 800.
The amount stipulated for the son is 500. That amount gets deducted from the 800, leaving 300.
The widow and the daughter split these evenly, receiving 150 apiece.
.
The will did not stipulate that the widow would receive 300. The specific amounts have to first be satisfied (-200 and -500) before the fraction can be distributed.
