Mary has 30 more quarters than dimes and 70 coins in total. If you take 30 from the 70 you get a result of 40. Half of those must be quarters and the other half must be dimes.ie 20 of each. The total number of quarters is this 20 plus the extra 30 ie 50 quarters and 20 dimes.
