Question 79288: I hope you can help me with this... Can you expain it to me also.. thanks
Seventy-two of the 140 students in the 8th grade are in school orchestra. 42 are in the chorus, and 12 are in both. For 8th grade:
1. How many are in the orchestra only?
2. How many are in the chorus only?
3. How many are in neither?
8. How many different students are there in the combined orchestra-chorus group?
(I came up with one set of answers, but my father comes up with different answers..)
Answer by bubblz190(11) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
1. There are 72 members in the orchestra, but 12 are also in chorus so those students don't count here. 72-12 = 60
2. There are 42 members in the chorus, but 12 are also in orchestra so those students don't count here. 42-12 = 30
3. We know that there are 140 students total, we also know that there are a total of 114 (72+42) in orchestra and chorus, but 12 students are counted twice in that total because they are a member of both. So, 114-12=102 and then you can subtract that number from 140 to get 38.
8. In #3 we figured out this answer. There are a total of 114 members in orchestra and chorus, but 12 are counted twice, so 114 - 12 = 102.
I hope this helps!
