The clerk hands five $1.00 bills to the bell hop and tell him to refund the guys' money. On the way to the room the bellhop thinks to himself ,' No way can three guys split $5.00, so he puts $2.00 in his pocket. So now each guy paid $9.00. $9x3= $27.00 plus $2.00 bellhop stole = $29.00! where is the other dollar?

The three guys paid $27. Of those $27, $25 went to the hotel, and $2 went to the bellhop.
$25 + $2 = $27
It adds up.
The manager gave the bellhop $5. Of those $5, $3 went to the three guys, and $2 went into the bellhop's pocket.
$3+$2=$5.
That adds up too.
There is no reason to add the $2 the bellhop kept along with the $27 the guys paid, because the two amounts were going in different directions.
