If the product of a number and -3 is reduced by 5, the result is 25 less than twice the opposite number. Find the number
:
Let the number be x, the opposite number will = -x
;
-3x - 5 = -2x - 25
:
Get rid of all those negatives, mult by -1:
3x + 5 = 2x + 25
3x - 2x = 25 - 5
x = 20 is the number
:
Try it in the original equation:
-3(20) - 5 = 2(-20) - 25
-60 - 5 = -40 - 25

+-3x-5+=+2%28-x%29-25+
Distribute the 2 to the -x
+-3x-5+=+-2x-25+
add 3x to each side
+-5+=+x-25+
add 25 to both sides
+20+=+x+
Substitute this in and check
+-3x-5+=+2%28-x%29-25+
+-3%2820%29-5+=+2%28-20%29-25+
+-60-5+=+-40-25+

YES!!!

Let n be the required number. The opposite of n is -n. From the problem description, you can write:
-3n-5 = -2n-25 Simplify and solve for n. Add 3n to both sides.
-5 = n-25 Addd 25 to both sides.
20 = n
The number is 20
