Question 72969: a fast food stand sells muffins and cookies. last monday the ratio of the number of muffins to the number of cookies sold was 16 to 13. a total of 145 muffins and cookies were sold. How many cookies were sold?
Answer by ptaylor(2198)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x= number of cookies sold
then (145-x)=number of muffins sold
We can now set up a ratio
16 is to 13 as x is to (145-x) and this can be written as follows:
Now we get rid of fractions by cross-multiplying:
get rid of parens
add 16x to both sides

divide both sides by 29
---------------------------------------number of cookies sold
----number of muffins sold

CK
divide right side numerator and denominator by 5

Hope this helps----ptaylor
